Wordpress: DeFacto Blogging Platform - Better Than Blogger?
Sep 30th, 2007 by ndraken
If you spend anytime surfing the web, you may have visited a few blogs here and there. Now, if you look carefully, sometimes you see the “Powered by Wordpress” logo. So what is Wordpress anyways?
Well, there are two flavors. The first one Wordpress.com is just like Blogger.com. You sign up for an account at Blogger, or Wordpress.com, and you post your articles logging into their server. What makes Wordpress.org unique is that you download the software, and install it on your own server, virtual hosting, or dedicated server hosting.
With freedom to install your own Wordpress blog, you have the ability to install any Wordpress plugin you want, any Wordpress theme you want. In essence, you have a great deal of freedom.
Why Wordpress? Wordpress is open source. It’s free. It lets the blogger post, and attempts to leave the technical crap out of the creative process. I say attempt because to install wordpress requires some technical knowledge. This is also true for installing plugins, and modifying themes.
Because of it’s flexibility, Wordpress has been so prevalent that there is a community of developers providing plugins, themes, and Wordpress templates. Wordpress is like the Microsoft of Blogging. If you’re interested on Blogblat, I am running Wordpress Mu.
So you don’t have the expert know how, or don’t have a virtual hosting, or dedicated hosting account the best thing to do is get a free blog from a site like this one. Then all you need to do is worry about writing, and leave the technical mumbo jumbo to me, Nick.
Using Wordpress is very intuitive, it has a dash board which takes some getting use to, but once you know how it works, the rest of the functionality is pretty straight forward. If you still need help, here is a very good reference on getting started.
I’ll talk to you later
-Nick
