What is the best blog software?

So what is the best blog software out there? Well there are some that you get an account on their server? Others you install on your own server or virtual hosting.
There are two versions of Wordpress.org blog software out there. There is Wordpress, and Wordpress Mu. You can read my previous post on Wordpress: De facto Blog Software.
Today I am going to to talk about the other major blog software. There is of course, Blogger.com, which is owned by Google, from Pyra Labs. The other major one is Typepad. Which you pay for. And of course, we can’t leave out Wordpress.com.
With Blogger, you have services integrated with Google. You can integrate it with an Adsense account. The bad part about it is you have that Blogger bar on top. I know many people who don’t like that. The good news is you can display Google Ads pretty easily. You can modify templates - that’s if you know something about programming. However, Blogger doesn’t have the plugin features that Wordpress.org provides. There is however great feature of Blogger that Wordpress.com does not permit, you can write your blog to promote and push products.
With Typepad, there are many integrated features. In fact they make it very user friendly. You have many widgets at your disposal. The cool part about it is you can have a video blog, a photo blog, or even a podcast. The features are all built in. However, you can achieve the same with plugins using Wordpress.org. So how much is it going to cost? The service is actually really valuable if you don’t want to spend the time with the technical mumbo jumbo, and you just want to write.
There are four levels of Typepad accounts.
- Basic - $4.95 per month, or $49.50 a year, this is for one blog and limited bandwidth
- Plus - $8.95 per month, or $89.50 a year, up to three blogs with slightly more bandwidth
- Pro - $14.95 per month, or $149.50 a year, unlimited blogs, 1Gb storage & 10Gb Bandwidth
- Premium - $29.95 per month or $299.50 a year, a pro account with double the bandwidth, and three times the storage, with membership to Typepad insider groups
Last but not least is Wordpress.com, the blog give away by Automattic - Author of Wordpress.org software. You can use this blog to promote products, and your Wordpress.com blog will get taken down. A great feature of Wordpress.com is you can keep your blog private, just between family members, and friends. To keep up with latest, because subscribing to an RSS feed is not possible on a private blog, you can keep up with the going’s on with Blog Surfer. There is also Tag Surfer, to include tags on the left hand side of the blog, and Blog Stats to see who has been visiting. However, one draw back is you don’t have the plugin features you have with Wordpress.org, or Wordpress Mu.
Of the three we went over, only Typepad charges. So it’s up to you if you want to select a free blog, or a blog service that charges. Or there is a fourth option. Sign up a blog here at BlogBlat.com with me, Nick.
I’ll talk to you later
